Boo

Apple released new MacBooks today. Improvements in processor (don't really care), storage (don't really care, even 160GB is too much for me), and memory (Boowtfhoo, I paid approximately $150 for 2GB RAM, which is now already included in the price).

Meh. Not that impressive of an update. I'm happy. Minus the RAM thingy. =P

Update: Nevermind, I noticed the Canadian price is $100 cheaper. So I paid like... $250 extra. Ugh.

Laptop Dilemma

Okay, I'd really love to buy a MacBook but I think it's a bit too pricey. I came across the new Sony VAIO SZ series today and they seem to be a pretty good competitor to the MacBooks. Anyways, here's a short summary with specs of the two laptops after I customized them. Need some opinion please!

MacBook (black)
2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB memory
160GB hard drive
Double-layer SuperDrive
Intel GMA X3100 graphics card
AppleCare Protection Plan (3 years)
Battery life up to 6 hours

Total = $1922

There's a $100 off this due to student discount.

Sony VAIO SZ740
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB memory
120GB hard drive
DVD±R DL / DVD±RW / DVD-RAM Drive
3 years of warranty
Battery life up to 4 hours (upgradeable to 6)

Total = $1799

I wonder if Sony has student discounts? =P

Even if I upgrade the battery for Sony, it's still cheaper than the MacBook. The Sony one is coming out on February 10. Not too far away. The only thing that I don't know about the Sony laptop is its graphics card. It doesn't say anywhere on the site. Hmm. Also, the price for Sony's laptop is from the American store, not the Canadian one. So there might be some changes, I guess. It should be out here around that time as well. I could go and play around with it at the Sony store here.

I don't really need a MacBook. I'm looking for a good performance laptop with a reasonable price. I just wanted to try OS X instead of Windows this time. But how does Windows Vista run on a 2GB of RAM? Some people have told me it's still slow so I have no idea about that.

MacBooks

I've been wanting a laptop for almost six months now. I was really tempted to buy a MacBook Pro but it's a little too expensive for me. So I waited. I waited six months for MacWorld hoping that Apple would refresh the whole MacBook lineup and they didn't. Gawsh. Instead, they introduced a new laptop known as the MacBook Air.

Design wise, it's a beauty. Sexy simplistic design. Love the aluminum finish to it. Backlit keyboard is always nice. The Remote Disc feature seems neat. Multi-touch trackpad as I had imagined. But I don't see who they are targeting for with this new product. It's just super slim. It has a 13.3 inch screen and I don't think you can classify it as ultraportable. I thought that it was a let down, specs and price wise. Apple has surely set a standard for slim laptops for sure though. We'll be seeing many like these in the future.

MacBook vs MacBook Air

For almost same amount of price and better specs, you can get the black MacBook after you upgrade its RAM to 2GB along with the 3 year extended warranty. Yeah, I really want that and I'm leaning towards it at the moment. Enough waiting. Of course I'll be pissed if the new MacBooks come out 3-4 months from now. =P

But whatever. I need a laptop for school and for all my art, design and photography needs. I'm stuck with an old Sony VAIO desktop with 256MB RAM. Heh. I'm trying to sell it. I don't think anyone is going to buy it though. But do you guys think it's a good deal? I need something small and light. 13 inch screen is fine with me. Maybe I can buy a separate monitor later on to accompany it; you know, just for graphics work you tend to need more space on screen.

I know I don't have a lot of readers on my blog yet but any type of suggestions are welcome.

Update: I think I am going to wait on this, yet again.
